Prayer

If we want any kind of renunciation in life—material or spiritual—we must only pray to the appropriate authority for that. To put it another way, one must submit his application honestly and humbly. Of course it goes without saying, whatever benediction one receives must be repaid, with interest, so that is the catch in all matters. The only benediction therefore worth having is Love for Krishna. more

Changing perspective, not position

The devotees’ apparent move to associate by moving into the same geographical area is external only. They actually do not associate spiritually. Because association means on the basis of a common goal—service to Krishna. But they associate not for that service, but for servicing their mundane desire for friendship.

Society and love. They have some sentiment of former association in ISKCON, so they take it that if they just live near one another the same association they experienced in the service of Prabhupada will again be effected. more

From the heart

There are two kinds of chanting of the Holy Name. One is mechanical, or forced by practice—sadhana—and the other is spontaneous welling up out of the heart automatically—just like two kinds of wells. One you have to force the water up out of the ground with a pump, and the other, artesian, water gushes forth from the ground automatically.

Transparency in representation

The perfection of the part is in how it expresses the purpose of the whole. Every living being is an infinitesimal part of the whole living being (Krishna) and his individuality is perfected only in as much He allows the purpose and glory of the whole living being to express himself through his infinitesimal self. more

Follow the heart

Krishna is chanting, and we are hearing, and thus realization takes place in the heart, not the head. The Holy Name descends from the spiritual stratum (Prabhupada), and therefore we do not actually chant, but we allow Krishna to manifest in sound by submitting to the impulse (inspiration) felt in the heart. In other words, when the conditioned soul wandering aimlessly in the material universe comes in touch with a pure devotee of the Lord (hears the name from the lips of a pure devotee), at that time, if he is fortunate, he feels the impulse to chant Hare Krishna and thus spontaneously the Name wells up from his heart (who is actually Krishna in sound form), and such a person is seen to be chanting the Holy Name. However, it is only after some time of purification. more

What needs saying

If someone can articulate this basic message—that we’re not this body—illuminating it from a hundred different directions, that will be revolutionary. Because this is the basic platform of the whole thing. This is the pivot of material existence and repeated birth and death. It bears repeating again and again, over and over.

The whole Bhagavatam is comprised of thousands of verses repeating again and again. It’s not academic. And Prabhupada was so simple, direct and to the point. People don’t go to the temple to hear people pontificating about philosophy. Even Prabhupada didn’t come off as a scholar. Sometimes he was more like a talkshow host, many times he was funny.

Instead, everyone now wants to be known as scholarly or esoteric, knowledgeable, and no one wants to say what needs saying.

Our business is to expose and embarrass the scholars and scientists, because this is the vital nerve of the whole misconception of modern human society. If some of them are humiliated and come to their senses and undergo a change of heart, then okay, but what is the use of trying to tactfully cultivate the scholars or scientists, spending years trying to win over one or two persons? And all to no one else’s benefit. Better to expose them, let the whole world see come to its senses. And if one or two persons, scientists come, okay, let them also, but mostly they won’t. At least the rest of the world will benefit.

Surrender is the process

If there’s no surrender, you can’t make any progress. Prabhupada says everything depends on surrender. At work on the job, you have to surrender to the boss. When you marry, you have to surrender. In the military you have to surrender. Nothing can be done without surrender. This is even more applicable on the spiritual platform than anywhere else. Surrender, submission is the key. The whole process depends on surrender. Arjuna was arguing with Krishna—”I can’t do this, I don’t want to do this. How can I kill my family members? Uncles, cousins? Teacher? Friends?” The whole Bhagavad-gita was spoken just to convince Arjuna to surrender. more

Capturing the world leaders

People in power look at the direction of the popular opinion. Really they put themselves at the mercy of the population. Democracy means from the bottom up. Autocracy means from top down. If you can capture the interest of the common man, then those on the top will have to cater to that interest in order to get their post. Capture a brilliant man by capturing first a thousand lunk heads. Preaching means tactical. We have to see which tactic is going to bring us the advantage.

Eternally vibrating everywhere

The act of chanting the Holy Name and the result (cause and effect) are the same. Chanting is both the means and the result. One of the main problems we encounter with the process of chanting the Holy Name is that we anticipate some result. This is because we are projecting the exploitive material conception, which we are accustomed to work under, onto the spiritual platform. more

Parents and children

Hansadutta: All parents look to their children, hoping they will embrace or carry on their line of thought, but this is almost never the case, 80 to 90% of the time. We see that even Srila Prabhupada’s children did not follow in his footsteps. This must be the greatest suffering: for a parent to see his children’s indifference or rebellion. It is very, very painful. The devotees thought their children would be different, but look at the outcome of the gurukulas, look at the children of the devotees. In spite of all that Srila Prabhupada did for his family in the years of his household life, his children did not embrace Krishna consciousness. more
