Play act for Krishna or for Maya

Just like children play cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians when they are small, imitating the activities of the grownups, similarly, this play spills over or rather continues right into their adult life. Karmis pattern their lives after their parents, friends, society, emulating role models like Clint Eastwood or other characters, fictitious or real; whereas the devotees act out their parts under the direction of the Acharya, and become immersed in the transcendental pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the great devotees. It’s all a play act, but one is orchestrated by Maya and the other by Krishna. The same activity; we need only to shift our focus to Krishna, make Krishna the center of everything we do.

Not gonna survive

Scrambling for survival, to avoid depression, inflation or atomic war is ultimately a futile endeavor. The real endeavor should be to firmly establish or entrench the mind in firm faith in the mercy of the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna. There is no end to this survival consciousness, because it is rooted in the bodily conception of life. So how can one preserve the temporary material body and those things related to it? The endeavor must be to preserve Krishna consciousness under all circumstances. Faith and devotion to Krishna is the only substantial protection against all kinds of impending danger—gross, subtle or spiritual. more

Renunciation

There is no use of going to the forest for one who has failed to control his mind, because he only takes his uncontrolled mind with him. The best course of action is to remain situated in that environment where one finds himself due to the arrangement of Krishna and practice chanting the Holy Name of Krishna, expecting the mercy of the Lord in due course of time. more

Connecting with Krishna

Everyone is full of fear, and that fear can only be mitigated by coming nearer to Krishna, which can easily be done simply by vibrating the Holy Name, just as coming nearer to fire automatically counteracts being cold. Chanting the Holy Name of Krishna is the essence of all spiritual practices, and it is the very foundation of spiritual life. more

Kirtan purifies the heart and mind

People need to be exposed to kirtan. Kirtan purifies and pacifies the mind and heart so they can begin to comprehend Krishna consciousness. Without that, their minds are so polluted and scattered they cannot understand. Even whatever you say may be perfect and eloquently spoken, but they cannot receive it. So kirtan is for everyone. It’s the only remedy.

Success and failure

A progressive devotee accepts everything as an impetus to advance in Krishna consciousness. A devotee’s premise is that the supreme sanctioning power is Krishna, and that nothing can take place without His sanction. Because Krishna is all-good and desires to reclaim the conditioned souls to take them back to Godhead, whatever takes place in our lives is good for us. Everything is meant to help us return to Godhead. This consciousness is not always easy to maintain, but that is the mood of a progressive devotee. It does not matter whether we are brahmachari, sannyasi, grihastha, man or woman. A devotee must be progressive. That is what makes him great. more

Loose screws

Anything that is not Krishna is not Krishna and will eventually dry up and fall away. Everyone is born with certain inclinations or propensities, and has to act on them. Just like Arjuna. He was a warrior, and his business was killing, and that’s what Krishna asked of him. By dovetailing our propensities in devotional service to Krishna, they become purified. Everything has a relation to Krishna. The only way we learn that is by applying it for Krishna. Otherwise the propensity cannot be purified, cannot be resolved. more

Information vs Revelation

We only know what we are told by higher authorities (author)—father, mother, teachers, political leaders. We accept such knowledge by association with others through application. Alone, without association, we cannot know anything. Directly, in and of itself, we always require association of higher authorities to confirm or deny what is what. more

Seriously?

Reading the newspaper. The stories strike me as bizarre, but how would I make that obvious to “normal” readers? They take the news as seriously as we take shastras.
