Prescription takes precedence over books

Back in 1975, when Srila Prabhupada was meeting with the GBC and they were having a discussion about drafting the pledge of allegiance, at some point there’s discussion about whether to add also a line pledging allegiance or obedience to Srila Prabhupada’s instructions in his books. And Srila Prabhupada says that his direct instruction supersedes the books. more

Maya

On a morning walk with Prabhupada in Stockholm, Sweden, we were suddenly blinded by what appeared to be the light of the sun. It was only the sun being reflected from a large glass window. Prabhupada stopped and pointed in the direction of the glare. “This is maya. more

Part in relation to the whole

Everything has a relationship to Krishna. The only way we learn that is by applying it for Krishna; otherwise we cannot purify it, or it cannot be resolved. Prabhupada could see everyone as he was, a part in relation to the whole. We’re like screws to the part, separate from the machine. The self-realized soul can see “This part belongs here.” Apart from that, we’re lost. We must have the guidance of the self-realized soul. (see Without the self-realized soul at the head.) more

“My books will live forever”

Early one morning in the late part of 1974, at Bhaktivedanta Manor, I was called to Srila Prabhupada’s room. Prabhupada was sitting on his bed, I was sitting on the floor. He asked me if I would accept his appointing me to act as a BBT trustee. more

Are you ready?

Sometimes we hear devotees lamenting that they were not able to have the personal association of Srila Prabhupada because some heavy-handed devotee kept them away or other worldly circumstance prevented the opportunity. I find that everyone had the equal opportunity to be near and intimate with Srila Prabhupada, provided that the person in question was ready, willing and able to do anything and everything that Srila Prabhupada requested at all times. more

Vaishnavas are killers

One day Prabhupada was sitting behind his desk and he began musing over the great Vaishnavas. He said, “Arjuna was a great Vaishnava, and he was killing. Bhima was a great Vaishnava, and he was killing. Dhruva Maharaja was a Vaishnava, and he was killing. Parikshit Maharaja was killing. Prahlada Maharaja was killing. Rama was killing. Krishna was killing. Practically speaking, Vaishnavas are killers.” And he chuckled a bit. more

Big beads

Sometime in the early 70’s (73 or 74) Prabhupada came to Hawaii, and I also came there from Germany to see him and briefly act as his secretary. The first Sunday Feast he was there, all the fringe devotees who were living in the hills and other islands of Hawaii also came there in big numbers. Many of them brought fruits, flowers and other gifts. One boy brought a huge set of Tulasi japa beads and presented them to Srila Prabhupada. more

It is all your mercy

Prabhupada in GermanyIn Germany, while on a morning walk, a helicopter passed overhead. Prabhupada looked up and asked, “What is that?” Someone informed him, “A helicopter.” Then Prabhupada laughed and said once Shyamasundar arranged to have him picked up at Heathrow airport (London) and flown to the Manor at Letchmore Heath. He laughed again, saying he was very impressed, “But in the end I had to pay the expense of that luxury.” Then he told the story of a guru and his disciple. Once there was a guru who had a very capable disciple. more
