Is the US Declaration of Independence illegal?<\/p>\n

On Tuesday night, while Republican candidates in Nevada were debating such American issues as nuclear waste disposal and the immigration status of Mitt Romney’s gardener, American and British lawyers in Philadelphia were taking on a far more fundamental topic.<\/p>\n

Namely, just what did Thomas Jefferson think he was doing?<\/p>\n

Some background: during the hot and sweltering summer of 1776, members of the second Continental Congress travelled to Philadelphia to discuss their frustration with royal rule.<\/p>\n

By 4 July, America’s founding fathers approved a simple document penned by Jefferson that enumerated their grievances and announced themselves a sovereign nation.<\/p>\n

Called the Declaration of Independence, it was a blow for freedom, a call to war, and the founding of a new empire.<\/p>\n

Mistakenly accepting the material body as one\u2019s self, the conditioned soul is busy from morning till night searching for food, shelter, protection and sex, and in the struggle to obtain all these bodily necessities he develops love, friendship and society (social position) with similarly bewildered conditioned souls like himself. These three relationships are the platform from which he shows off his acquired material WEALTH, WOMAN and PRESTIGE. In this way the material existence is just like the atmosphere of a mental institution in which every inmate imagines himself to be someone or something he is not. Thus he is a madman. more<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In materialistic life one is encaged within the body and deluded by false egoism. Thus one thinks, \u201cI am this body,\u201d \u201cI am a human being,\u201d \u201cI am an American,\u201d \u201cI am an Indian.\u201d This bodily conception is due to false ego. Being deluded by false ego, one identifies himself with a certain family, nation or community. In this way one\u2019s attachment for the material world grows deeper and deeper. Thus it becomes very difficult for the living entity to extricate himself from his entanglement. Such people are graphically described in the Sixteenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita<\/em> (16.13\u201315<\/a>) in this way:<\/p>\n

\nbhavishyati punar dhanam
\nasau maya hatah shatrur
\nhanishye chaparan api
\nishvaro \u2019ham aham bhogi
