New York Times - Wed 28 March 2007 - ANDREW MARTIN Burger King Shifts Policy on Animals

In what animal welfare advocates are describing as a “historic advance,” Burger King, the world’s second-largest hamburger chain, said yesterday that it would begin buying eggs and pork from suppliers that did not confine their animals in cages and crates.

The company said that it would also favor suppliers of chickens that use gas, or “controlled-atmospheric stunning,” rather than electric shocks to knock birds unconscious before slaughter. It is considered a more humane method, though only a handful of slaughterhouses use it. go to story

Hansadutta: Love of God includes love of everything, because everything comes from God. If you love God, you must also love His creation. If you want to return to your original state, living in harmony with all of God's creatures, you have to stop killing them. Christ says, "Whatever you do unto the least of my brothers, you do it unto me."

Guest: Some of the world's most renowned religious leaders eat meat. I can think of one who eats veal. [Here referring to the late Pope John Paul II.]

Hansadutta: Meat eating makes men vile. That makes them animal killers.

Guest: This seems awfully hard to take. I mean, these people are very holy men.

GUEST: A cow is raised specifically for the purpose of being murdered. Isn't that worse? Doesn't that make it a more heinous crime?

HANSADUTTA: More heinous or less heinous, killing is killing. Suppose I kill your father or your small brother. What is the difference? Will you think, "It is better to kill my small brother"? Killing is killing. We should not kill. The Bible says, "Thou shalt not kill."


Cow urine is medicinal

In Vedic civilization, the king was responsible for the lives of the citizens. According to the Vedic concept, the animals born in the land are also citizens of that country; therefore they have a right to be protected. Man is the elder brother of the animals. As such, man should protect his less intelligent brothers, especially the cows, because the cows give us milk.

A man can eat practically anything to maintain his body, but milk is the perfect food. One can live simply by taking milk, which makes the brain very sharp. The brain must be in good order so that one can assimilate Vedic wisdom or higher transcendental knowledge. In this age, the scarcity of food and milk causes deficiency in people's brain power. As a result, people are unable to understand Vedic knowledge. Thus they cannot advance in the goal of human life, which is to understand God and go back home, back to Godhead.

The cow is the most valuable animal on earth, because the cow eats only grass and gives us milk, from which we can produce ghee, yoghurt, cheese and butter. The cow also produces dung and urine, which are pure substances. In India, the village people build their huts out of cow dung. Cow urine is medicinal. It is beneficial in the treatment of liver disease. From cow dung one can make gas for cooking. Also, cow dung can be collected and mixed with straw and dried in cakes. This is said to be the best fuel for cooking. When the cow finally dies, one can take the skin and make shoes and other things.

Everything about the cow is useful. The cow renders great service to the human being. Therefore the cow should be protected.

All living creatures should be protected. No animal should be killed, not even an ant, and especially not the cow. The bull helps to till the land for producing grain, which is the staple diet of the human being. The bull is considered to be the father of human society, and the cow is considered to be the mother. These two animals should be protected.

At the time of Maharaja Parikshit, 5000 years ago, there was one man who was trying to hurt these two animals, and the King was ready to kill him for this offence. At that time, no one imagined that in this age the government leaders would systematically raise cows for slaughter and that there would be propaganda against drinking milk and eating butter in favor of artificial things like margarine or vegetable oil.
