More jail time rejected: Inmates' request to wait out tough economy in Rockingham County jail is denied

Wright, the superintendent of Rockingham County House of Corrections, says spending time in his jail isn't fun, but he isn't surprised that a tough economy has some inmates reluctant to be released during a time when jobs are few and temperatures are dropping.

The jail superintendent said he recently received letters from two inmates requesting they be kept in jail despite them having served out their court-ordered sentences.

Wright said the letters essentially asked: "Can I stay the winter?"

"My take on it is the economy is dumping so far that jail isn't looking as bad," Wright said.

Struggling against all odds
Gruesome facts of material life Hansadutta das

Everyone on this planet is a condemned homeless refugee on a long death march beginning with birth, ending with death in one way or another — constantly being whipped and kicked by lust, anger and greed, and harassed by adhyatmik, adhidaivik, adhibhautik miseries, embarrassed by having to fight for eating, sleeping, defending and sex in the hopeless and futile cycle of birth, growth, staying for some time, producing some by-products, dwindling and dying. Perpetually bewildered in the states of lust, anger and greed, lamentation, illusion and madness. more

Prisoners in the material world

excerpt from Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.2.7, purport

Intelligent persons who can see properly may look into the general conditions of the living entities who are wandering in the cycle of the 8,400,000 species of life, as well as in different classes of human beings. It is said that there is an everlasting belt of water called the River Vaitarani at the entrance of the plutonic planet of Yamaraja, who punishes sinners in different manners. After being subjected to such sufferings, a sinner is awarded a particular species of life according to his deeds in the past. Such living entities as are punished by Yamaraja are seen in different varieties of conditioned life. Some of them are in heaven, and some of them are in hell. Some of them are brahmanas, and some of them are misers. But no one is happy in this material world, and all of them are either class A, B or C prisoners suffering because of their own deeds. The Lord is impartial to all circumstances of the sufferings of the living entities, but to one who takes shelter at His lotus feet, the Lord gives proper protection, and He takes such a living entity back home, back to Himself.
