Brazil Elects Clown to Congress

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

How are democratic elections like addition and subtraction of fractions? You choose the lowest common denominator to perform the job.

No joke! Illiterate clown triumphs in election

SAO PAULO – Voters the world over complain about having clowns for politicians, but Brazilians embraced the idea on Sunday by sending a real one to Congress with more votes than any other candidate.

Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva, better known by his clown name Tiririca, received more than 1.3 million votes in Sao Paulo state in Brazil's presidential and congressional elections. That was more than double the votes of the second-placed candidate in Brazil's most populous state.

Tiririca caught the attention of disillusioned voters by asking for their support with the humorous slogan: "It can't get any worse" and a promise to do nothing more in Congress than report back to them on how politicians spend their time.

"What does a congressman do? The truth is I don't know, but vote for me and I'll tell you," the 45-year-old said in his campaign advertisements.

Unqualified electorate
Still believe in change? A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

In those days [Vedic civilization], there was no political meeting. Political meeting was not necessary because there was no democracy. It was monarchy. The kings, they were so trained up that there was no necessity of democracy. Actually, the modern government, democracy... We are experiencing, especially the great democratic country, America. So the democracy, the president elected by popular vote, is now being condemned. So what is the value of this democracy? You elect somebody by your vote, again condemn. That means the electors, the voters, have also no experience, and neither the man who is voted, he is also very good man. Otherwise, why you should change your opinion once you have elected a person to act as your head executive? So the democracy has proved a farce. It has no meaning, because people are not educated. more

No right to complain about government

excerpt from lecture on Nectar of Devotion, Bombay, January 4, 1973

We are grudging against government. So many complaints we have got. But there is no question of grudging against government; because we are not Krishna conscious, therefore we are electing our representatives, fools and rascals. How we can expect good government? You become Krishna conscious, you elect your representative, Krishna conscious, and the government will be all right. You'll be happy. Go on.
