This is a comment on the article written by Varaha Das entitled "Firefly Gurus Burning Out". I read this article with interest and also found it quite ironic. In the article Varaha Das writes about how Satsvarupa Das deliberately lied to the devotees about Srila Prabhupada's last wishes to see his disciples, along with all the other lies about position and power structure within ISKCON. Basically, it is about being pushed out of the loop within the movement, and away from any personal association with Srila Prabhupada.
When I lived in the Dham, Satsvarupa das was the GBC for Northern California. The householders were writing to him reports about the abuses that were going on in the Berkeley Women's Sankirtan party. It all fell upon deaf ears. Little did we know that it was ISKCON policy to beat, abuse and pimp out their women to collect money. Householders who were good devotees were told they were in Maya on a daily basis, simply because they were married. Anyone who didn't go out every day to collect money for the temple was treated like second-class devotees, even though they were doing service (altar, maintenance, cleaning, etc.). Also, about 1974, they started to push the women into the back of everything. How would you feel if you could not get a good look at the Deities during arotika? How would you feel if you were told you could not go on the altar anymore, unless no man could be found? Also, from what I have seen going on the movement from as early as 1974 sannyasa was something men took within the movement more for power than anything else (not all but most).
So, you see, not much has changed. There still is no honor or credibility within the GBC. No wonder so many devotees have stopped going to the temple and now worship at home. That way we can get all the personal association of Srila Prabhupada we want through his books. Besides, those knuckleheads can't even see that our Guru is alive.
Please chant Hare Krsna and be happy.
